Yellow

Pokémon Yellow is on the surface the same as the original Red/Blue Pokémon games. However, it is actually based on the TV show of Pokémon, which was in turn based on the original games...so everything has come round circle, so to speak. This game is scheduled to be released on October 25, 1999 and will be available in two ways, as simply a cartridge or with a special Pikachu edition Gameboy Color. This special edition will be yellow and has a Pikachu in the left corner and a Jigglypuff and Togepi in the right. My advice is: if you're thinking about getting a Gameboy Color, wait for this one! While this is the first special Pokémon edition Gameboy in America, a few have already been released in Japan...but not this one!

Speaking of Japan, although this game has yet to be released here it's been out in Japan for the past year, so lots of information about this game is known. One of the most obvious differences is that Pikachu, the only Pokémon you can get at the beginning, follows you around the entire game. He, along with some other Pokémon, learn different moves at different levels then their Red/Blue counterparts. Also Jessie and James, the infamous Team Rocket trainers from the TV show, are in the game sporting three Pokémon: Koffing, Ekans and Meowth which all evolve later in the game. Another change is the Gym Leaders, for instance in Red/Blue Lt. Surge had a few Pokémon including Magnemite, Pikachu and Raichu. In Yellow, just like the series, he has one high level Raichu. Trust me, he's very hard to beat! Some other differences are that some Pokémon can be found in different areas. Also, just like the show, Pikachu refuses to evolve when you use a Thunderstone. But unlike Red/Blue, I don't think a Raichu can be found in the wild...rather interesting if you ask me.

Because this is, well, something Pokémon that no one really knows everything about, lots of rumors surround it. As an example, some people think that the Pokémon Pikablu can be found in this game. First of all, Pikablu is not a real Pokémon. The name of this Pokémon is Mariu and is probably only found in the Gold/Silver versions. On the subject of rumors, I think I'll take this opportunity to start one of my own! Notice the three Pokémon on the Pikachu GBC? Both Jigglypuff and Togepi appear on it, both Pokémon that at one point or another follow Ash around in the TV show...perhaps they'll both make an appearance? We'll all see come October 25th...
